BPA Free Plastic Bags, an Important Choice

Not all plastics are the same. Usually we look for performance and convenience in the plastic products we use in the kitchen for both food storage and preparation. It is more important to pay attention to the chemicals that our plastics are made with.  BPA free plastic bags are a simple but important choice when it comes to your family’s safety and your food’s flavor.

Bisphenol A, commonly called BPA, is a chemical that is present in many plastics. The FDA has regulated this chemical because it can migrate into foods that come into contact with it. Currently the FDA states that small amounts of BPA are fine, and only regulates it as an additive to food, or when they find evidence that the chemical easily leaches into food that comes into contact with containers made with the material.

Though the FDA seems to have little concern about the negative effects of BPA, many scientists are concerned that recent studies have shown we have good cause to worry about BPA’s and that consumers have a need to reduce exposure. This Newsweek article does a good job of highlighting the concerns of scientists and the studies that have been done, which the FDA seems to ignore, or perhaps more likely the chemical companies have lobbied for them to ignore.

Another concerning chemical used in plastics is polyvinyl chloride, more commonly known as PVC. The plasticizers in PVC leach into foods, especially those foods with high fat content. One of the most dangerous and common plasticizers in PVC is diethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP), which is suspected to be a carcinogen.
